Background
Czech Radio, one of the leading public radio broadcasting organizations in the Czech Republic, is celebrating 90 years since its first broadcasting in 1923. For this purpose, the radio decided to launch a microsite offering visitors an engaging way to learn more about the history and role of Czech Radio (in the Czech Republic). The Czech Radio's division New Media put the project into hands of Flow Media in cooperation with Prague Bistro. Flow Media’s role was programming of the site.
Design
„In a close cooperation with Czech Radio, we have created a modern and well thought out single page layout that does not shatter information—it rather tells a contiguous story. The graphical solution shows our inspiration from merging the manual-tuning radio receiver and modern devices and puts historical black & white photos into contemporary design elements. One of the main parts of the project is an interactive time line that presents the most important events of the last 90 years in a well arranged manner. Everything has been fine tuned for the intuitive and the most comfortable control. We wanted the user not only to get interesting information while browsing through the site, but also to have visually pleasant experience which we have, as we believe, achieved.“ —Jan Kolář, Art Director at Prague Bistro
Technical Solution
The whole site was designed as a huge single page application which lead to approaching its development in a different fashion that most of our other work. The server side runs on a custom build PHP base specifically tailored for single page applications. For the client side, we have developed a new framework built on top of the Google Closure Library that leverages the current HTML5 technologies and is just the right amount of JavaScript needed for the job. The end result is a single page application that acts like a regular multi-page one which makes it more comfortable to use.
Conclusion
To develop the microsite reminding important milestones in the history of Czech Radio, Flow Media used the newest and challenging methods to develop highly interactive and attractive site. Visitors enjoy hundreds of audio and video recordings, animations, and photos taking them back in time but in an up-to-date way.
